With Your Help, We've Accomplished Big Projects This Year.... | Con Su Ayuda, Hemos Logrado Ejec

Every year, CREAR opens its doors to volunteer groups looking to engage with our small coastal community. This summer, we were honored to welcome four groups of students in partnership with Travel for Teens, a company which offers international travel experiences to teens from ages 10-18. As a part of their journey through Costa Rica, students spend half a week engaging in community projects with CREAR and exploring the beauty and fun activities Sámara has to offer.

Cada año, CREAR abre sus puertas a los grupos de voluntarios buscando involucrarse con nuestra pequeña comunidad costera. Este verano, fuimos honrados de dar la bienvenida a cuatro grupos de estudiantes en alianza con Travel For Teens, una compañía que ofrece experiencias de viajes internacionales para adolescentes entre las edades de 10 a los 18 años de edad. Parte de su viaje a través de Costa Rica, los estudiantes pasan media semana participando de proyectos comunitarios con Asociación CREAR y explorando las actividades hermosas y divertidas que Sámara tiene para ofrecer.

Our first volunteer group worked to beautify the salon comunal in El Torito, coating the extensive inside walls with fresh paint. The salon comunal is a large fixture in our neighboring communities--twice a year, it hosts our day camp and exposition of student artwork, in addition to serving as our classroom for our Art & English program. It serves as a location for Town meetings and other important community events.

Nuestro primer grupo de voluntarios trabajaron en el proyecto de embellecimiento del Salón Comunal de Torito, cubriendo las extensas paredes interiores con pintura fresca. El Salón Comunal es un elemento importante en nuestras comunidades vecinas, albergan las actividades del campamento de día, las hermosas exposiciones de arte e inglés, además de servir como aula para nuestro Programa educativo de arte e inglés.

While their fellow volunteers were working in El Torito, our second volunteer group worked to help us bring life to our office and outdoor classroom space here in Sámara. Armed with paint brushes and four different colors of paint, volunteers painted our compost bin, bodega, sink, picnic tables and cement posts of the rancho. Additionally, they helped us plant rows of colorful plants in the garden. We are so grateful to now have a space as colorful and vibrant as the children we are lucky enough to work with!

Mientras los compañeros voluntarios trabajaban en El Torito, nuestro segundo grupo de voluntarios trabajaron en dar vida a nuestra oficina y al espacio del aula al aire libre que tenemos en Sámara. Armados de pintura y brochas en cuatro diferentes colores, los voluntarios pintaron nuestra compostera, bodega de materiales, la pila, nuestras mesas de concreto y los postes del aula. Adicionalmente, ellos nos ayudaron a embellecer el jardín con hermosos y coloridas filas de plantas. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos de tener ahora un espacio tan colorido y vibrante como los niños y las niñas con los que tenemos la suerte y la dicha de trabajar!

Two weeks ago, another group with Travel for Teens spent a day cleaning up and painting a classroom at our local high school to serve as a daycare.

Hace dos semanas, otro grupo de Travel For Teens pasaron el día limpiando y pintando un aula del colegio de Sámara con el fin de contribuir al proyecto de habilitar un espacio que sirva como guardería para estudiantes de escasos recursos.

For the rest of their stay with us, they helped to clean up a park for the children of the Cantarrana neighborhood. We planted trees, painted the rancho, cleaned up the yard, and fixed up and repainted the playground. Last year, another group built the mini rancho and swing set that still stands in the park today! It’s rewarding to see the ways in which our hard-working volunteers’ efforts still continue to make an impact.

El resto de los días de su estadía con nosotros, ayudaron a limpiar un parque infantil del Barrio Cantarrana de Sámara. Plantamos árboles, pintamos el rancho, arreglamos el jardín, reparamos y repintamos el campo de juegos. El año pasado otro grupo construyó un mini rancho y los columpios que al día de hoy se mantienen en este hermoso y preciado parque. Es gratificante ver las formas en que los esfuerzos de nuestros trabajadores voluntarios continúan teniendo un impacto.

This week, we welcomed our final volunteer group to CREAR. For the first three days, our volunteers were hard at work putting in a new tire swing, a drainage system for our outdoor sink, re-graveling the yard, repainting our outdoor storage unit, and decorating the shed that a previous group painted.

Esta semana, les dimos la bienvenida a nuestro último grupo de voluntarios de CREAR. Para los primeros tres días, nuestros voluntarios trabajaron duro colocando un nuevo y maravilloso columpio hecho de llanta, también un sistema de drenaje para nuestra pila exterior, regravando el patio, repintando nuestra unidad de almacenamiento exterior y decorando el cobertizo que pintó un grupo anterior.

On their last day here in Sámara, we were extremely grateful to host Ashley Greene, a local volunteer and EPA employee, to give an informative presentation on marine debris. After convening at Casa CREAR in the morning to discuss the day’s plan, we headed out to Matapalo to clean up the area surrounding the soccer field. We are proud to report that the volunteers picked up 1,414 pieces of litter; and we were surprised to learn that the item we most clean up were metal bottle caps, with small plastic pieces (unsurprisingly) coming in at a close second. Returning back to CREAR at the end of the day, our volunteers had some great suggestions for keeping our beaches and community spaces clean and litter-free.

Para su último día aquí en Sámara, estuvimos sumamente agradecidos de tener a Ashley Greene, una voluntaria, empleada de la Agencia de Protección del Ambiente (EPA por sus siglas en inglés) de los Estados Unidos, para dar una presentación informativa sobre los desechos marinos. Luego de convenir en Casa CREAR durante la mañana para dialogar sobre el plan del día, nos dirigimos a la comunidad de Matapalo para realizar una limpieza del área de la Cancha Ecológica de fútbol playa Matapalo. Estamos orgullosos de informar que los voluntarios recolectaron 1414 piezas de desechos; inclusive estuvimos sorprendidos de aprender que el tipo de desecho que más encontramos fueron en primer lugar tapas metálicas de botellas y en segundo lugar piezas pequeñas de plástico (como era de esperar). Volviendo a CREAR al final del día, nuestro grupo de voluntarios tuvieron excelentes sugerencias para mantener los espacios de nuestras playas y comunidades más limpias y libres de desechos contaminantes.

Again, we would like to express our gratitude to the efforts of the staff and volunteers of Travel for Teens. It is a pleasure to welcome such young and motivated teens here in Sámara and even more so, to be able to engage thoughtfully and meaningfully with our beautiful community.
