Un Repaso Sobre lo Realizado Este Año Desde el Programa Ambiente y Salud | A Review of Our Environme

Si tenemos buenas conductas para cuidar nuestra salud, tendremos también la capacidad de cuidar nuestro entorno. La relación que tiene el estado de la salud propia de cada uno de nosotros influye directamente en la forma en que nos relacionamos con la naturaleza.

Bajo esta consigna es la manera en que queremos desde Asociación CREAR que el Programa Ambiente y Salud se desarrolle, para así aportar a la niñez de las escuelas públicas de Sámara y Torito.

Desde que CREAR existe, el acercamiento a las escuelas públicas ha sido una constante, las charlas y actividades sobre el ambiente, sobre nutrición y salud, cambio climático, entre otros; ha sido parte de la promoción de buenas conductas para proteger el ambiente y los recursos naturales las cuales se ha realizado con mucho entusiasmo y creatividad.

Es por lo anterior que queremos formalizar este trabajo desde el Programa Ambiente y Salud, donde no sólo lo integra Asociación CREAR, sino que las escuelas públicas y otras organizaciones pueden ser parte de estas alianzas, para así crecer en conjunto. Este año hemos podido crecer a nivel de alianzas ya que hemos realizado varias actividades especiales en conjunto con diferentes organizaciones sobre educación ambiental en la Escuela de Sámara y la Escuela de Torito.

Empezamos primero con la visita de las estudiantes de salud de la Universidad de Peru de los Estados Unidos. Desde esa alianza se pudo desarrollar una feria de salud informativa en la cual se pudo realizar en las comunidades de Torito y de Matapalo así como en la Escuela Samara Pacific. Esta feria consistió en que las personas recibieran información sobre su salud de manera gratuita. Por medio de la medición de parámetros de salud es la manera en que podemos saber que tan propenso estamos a que se den enfermedades.

SALUD

Otro componente interesante fue la exposición sobre los tipos de azúcares que existen, sus beneficios y consecuencias. Se realizó una exposición para evidenciar las cantidades de azúcar procesada contenida en muchos de los productos llamados comida chatarra, tan populares en las meriendas. Al ver las enormes cantidades de azúcares, fue un shock para todos los que visitaron la feria, realmente estamos pasándonos del límite permitido según la Organización Mundial de la Salud.

Nuestra siguiente actividad fue grandiosa, nos aventuramos con toda la población escolar de la Escuela de Sámara a visitar los acueductos de agua potable tanto de Sámara como de Cangrejal. Con la ASADA de Sámara iniciamos nuestro recorrido en el pozo que conduce agua desde el acuífero río Mala Noche. Seguimos por el tanque de almacenamiento ubicado en Santo Domingo y luego recorrimos el sistema de distribución hasta llegar a la salida en el tubo de la escuela. Luego gracias a la guía de la ASADA de Cangrejal visitamos este sistema de acueducto partiendo desde el pozo en el maravilloso río Buena Vista, pasando por el tanque de almacenamiento en Cantarrana y seguimos por el sistema de distribución de todo Cangrejal y el Canto de los Gavilanes. Fue genial conocer a Rolvin y a Miguel, ambos administradores de dichas ASADAS, la cual hacen una gran labor.

AUGA

Con la Patrulla Ecológica Infantil de Matapalo pudimos tener el privilegio de la visita de Alexander Rosales de ASOPEM (Asociación para la Protección de las especies Meliponini). En esta oportunidad fue maravilloso conocer las diminutas pero grandiosas abejas nativas sin aguijón. Estas especies son de gran importancia ecológica ya que llevan a cabo los procesos de polinización que nos brindan frutos y semillas.

BIODIVERSIDAD

La construcción de una compostera en las instalaciones de Asociación CREAR, ha sido parte de los proyectos ecológicos que hemos implementado, ha venido a contribuir con el reciclaje de nutrientes. Ramas, hojas, restos de podas, residuos orgánicos que generamos durante las clases; estos ya no van al camión de basura. Sino que depositamos todo esto en nuestra compostera. A partir de la charla recibida por Martin Isenburg y la donación de material por parte de BreakWater Expedition fue posible este pequeño proyecto que tiene una gran importancia ambiental. Pronto tendremos abono gratis!

Promoción del reciclaje en los centros educativos!

Para una eficiente contribución al reciclaje de los materiales que desechamos en las Escuelas fue necesario realizar un reacomodo de los recipientes de separación así como la señalización para lograr depositar los diferentes tipos de residuos en los contenedores referidos. Esta iniciativa se vio reforzada por una charla así como el monitoreo constante de las y los estudiantes en garantizar la correcta clasificación de los residuos sólidos.

RESIDUOS SÓLIDOS

Otra de las charlas interesantes que se pudieron realizar fue en alianza con Proyecto Corales. Esta organización ha estado trabajando en divulgar la importancia de los corales como formadores de arrecifes en la zona de Sámara, así como lo vulnerables que pueden ser ante la contaminación y el uso de productos químicos en las actividades humanas.

BIODIVERSIDAD MARINA

El acto cívico de celebración del día mundial del ambiente llevada a cabo el 4 de Junio en las Escuelas de Sámara y de Torito fue grandioso. Hubo presentaciones artísticas, poesía, exposición sobre el cuido del ambiente, las ASADAS donaron a cada estudiante un libro de Guardianes de la Naturaleza. El cierre de esta celebración, realizamos un acto ceremonial, el cual por medio de un planeta que decía Cuidemos nuestro hogar, colgamos promesas por parte de cada estudiante sobre un mejor comportamiento en nuestro diario vivir para cuidar los recursos naturales.

Otro proyecto que iniciamos en alianza con la ASADA de Sámara ha sido la reforestación de la cuenca del Río Mala Noche. En esta ocasión pudimos trabajar con cerca de 40 estudiantes del Liceo de Sámara, donde pudieron ser parte de una charla sobre la importancia del bosque y el buen manejo de las cuencas hidrográficas. Para complementar esta charla realizamos una jornada de reforestación en conjunto con la Fuerza Pública y Turismo Pro Sámara, logrando así la siembra de unos 450 árboles en sectores sin bosque de la cuenca del Río Mala Noche.

RESTAURACIÓN DE LOS BOSQUES

Desde hace unos 4 años la Universidad Nacional ha estado trabajando con Playa Sámara en temas de plan de evacuación en caso de Tsunami. Esto debido a que las comunidades de la costa de Playa Sámara se encuentran dentro de las zonas de riesgo ante un tsunami. Para esto desde el Programa Ambiente y Salud hemos estado trabajando con la Escuela de Sámara así como la Universidad Nacional en la preparación de simulacros que nos ayudan a prepararnos ante dichos eventos. El día 19 de Agosto se realizó un simulacro donde la población estudiantil y docente evacuó hasta poder llegar al denominado punto de reunión donde se encontrarían a salvo.

PREVENCIÓN ANTE EL RIESGO

Otra grandiosa actividad fue la capacitación llevada a cabo con el Movimiento Guardianes de la Naturaleza. Este movimiento ha logrado construir material educativo para docentes de las escuelas primarias las cuales vienen a impulsar la implementación de educación ambiental adaptado al currículo escolar del Ministerio de Educación Pública. Gracias a este grandioso trabajo es que desde CREAR somos mentores de Guardianes de la naturaleza y nuestro reto es enamorar a los y las docentes de ambas escuelas con esta guía.

PEDAGOGÍA EDUCATIVA

Esto no acaba aquí. Seguimos trabajando fuerte para nutrir y potenciar el Programa Ambiente y Salud. Como hemos mencionado anteriormente las alianzas son importantes para así trabajar en conjunto y aprovechar los recursos, conocimiento y sobre todo la pasión y así mostrarles a las nuevas generaciones que trabajar en equipo nos hace ganar a todos.

A Review of Our Environment and Health Program This Year

As we practice good health, we can directly take care of our surroundings as well. There is a significant relationship between our individual health and the way in which we relate to nature and the world.

This statement embodies our goals at Asociacion CREAR within our Environment and Health program , and how they can continue to develop in order to contribute to the children within the public schools of Samara and Torito.

From the time CREAR began, we initiated a direct approach to engage the public school students in a dialogue regarding the environment. These conversations have ranged from health and nutrition, to climate change. We promote sound, lifelong behaviors which will protect the environment and its natural resources, carried out with enthusiasm and creativity.

Our mission has formalized our Environmental and Health Program work, enabling CREAR to integrate with public schools and other organizations to form alliances promoting educational growth. This year, we have strengthened our alliances as we have carried out several special activities with different organizations, all in regards to environmental education at the schools in both Samara and Torito.

With the help of our first alliance, students from the University of Peru (in the United States), we developed an informative health fair, held in the communities of Torito and Matapalo, as well as the Samara Pacific School. This health fair provided free health education, carrying out the belief that as we better understand our bodies, we’re able to discover how vulnerable we are to diseases.

HEALTH

Within the health fair, we opened the floor to another significant component; conversations about the types of sugars that exist along with the consequences and benefits of exposure to them. We held an exhibition to show the amounts of processed sugar contained in many popular snacks, often referred to as “junk food”. Physically seeing the large amounts of sugars shocked everyone who attended the fair. According to the World Health Organization, many people truly do eat over the suggested limit, and because of this, it is always eye-opening for anyone to see the quantity to which they over-ingest with their own eyes. Following the sugar conversations, the next segment of the health fair was also enriching. We ventured with the entire school population of the Samara School to visit the drinking water aqueducts of both Samara and Cangrejal. The ASADA (Clean Water Administration) of Samara gave a tour of the well that carries water from the Mala Noche river aquifer. The tour continued through the storage tank located in Santo Domingo, and then through the distribution system until the exit in the school tube. Thanks to the guide of the ASADA de Cangrejal, we also visited an aqueduct system that started from the well in the wonderful river Buena Vista, passed through the storage tank in Cantarrana and continued on through the distribution system of the nearby neighborhoods of Cangrejal and Canto de los Gavilanes.

WATER

Another alliance we came upon was the ASOPEM, of which we had the privilege of meeting with Alexander Rosales from the Meliponini species protection organization. This opportunity was amazing, as we learned about the small, but magnificent stingless bees in our ecosystem. This specific species are of great environmental importance as they carry out the polarization process that gives us both fruit and seeds.

BIODIVERSITY and SOLID WASTE

The construction of a compost bin in CREAR’s facilities has been yet another ecological project implemented. The compost bin is composed of branches, leaves, pruning remains, and organic waste that we generate during classes. These nutrients are no longer going straight to the garbage truck, thanks to Martin Isenburg’s talk and the donation of materials by Breakwater expeditions. Though it may appear a small project, it is of great environmental importance as we will soon have free fertilizer! We are also promoting recycling in our education centers!

To increase the efficiency of our recycling contributions, it was necessary that we rearrange how we dispose of waste, through separate containers distinguishing different types of waste. Our initiative was reinforced through another environmental talk, as well as consistent monitoring of student’s disposal to ensure the correct classification of waste.

MARINE BIODIVERSITY

Proyecto Corales is another significant partnership we have held. They are an organization which has been working to disseminate the importance of coral reef formations in the Samara area. They work to discuss how vulnerable reefs can be to both pollution and the use of chemicals in human activities.

REFORESTATION

The National University of Costa Rica has been working with Playa Samara on issues of evacuation plans regarding tsunamis for around 4 years. Due to the fact that the communities on the coast of Playa Samara are within the risk areas of tsunamis, it is of great importance that they do. The Environment and Health Program has been working in collaboration with CREAR and the Samara School, as well as the National University in the preparation of drills that help prepare for these events. On August 19th, a drill was held where the student and teacher population evacuated until they reached the so-called meeting point where they would be safe.

Another project started within our partnership with the ASADA of Samara has been the reforestation of the Rio Mala Noche basin. During these occasions, we have worked with around 40 students from the Samara Lyceum, hosting discussions talking about the importance of the forest and good management of the river basins. To supplement this talk, we carried out a reforestation day together with the Pro Samara Public Force and Tourism, achieving the planting of over 450 trees in forest-free sectors of the Rio Mala Noche basin.

PREVENTION

On June 4th we celebrated World Environment Day within the Samara and Torito Public Schools. There were artistic presentations, sharing of poetry, and an exhibition on the care of the environment. The ASADAS were kind enough to donate each student a book entitled Guardians of Nature. The ending of the celebration brought a performance of a ceremonial act called the “take care of our home” promise. Each student made a promise on their own, and CREAR’s behalf about creating better behavior in our daily lives to take care of natural resources.

Another excellent activity we found ourselves amongst was the training carried out with the Guardians of Nature movement. This movement has built educational material for teachers in primary schools, which will promote the implementation of environmental education adapted to the school curriculum of the Ministry of Public Education. Between CREAR and the movement, we are all guardians of nature and our challenge is to ensure that we promote environmental consciousness.

EDUCATION

Our mission to ensure environmental progress does not end here. We continue to work hard to nurture and strengthen our Environment and Health Program. Alliances are of great importance to us, in order to take advantage of resources, spread knowledge, and above all, share our passion with new generations, promoting that working as a team allows us all to win!
