Coming full circle with CREAR

Hello Everyone, my name is Lucas Mozingo and I am the Assistant director of Asociación CREAR. The world works in curious ways and oftentimes it feels like time is running in a circle. We recently kicked off our 2023 volunteer season with two groups that are very close to my heart. I wanted to tell you all my story and how things have come full circle for me with CREAR!

I first came to know CREAR in the summer of 2014; I was just 17 years old, a rising senior in high school and my lacrosse team came on a “lacrosse and service” trip to Costa Rica. I had never left North America before and I remember feeling anxious excitement at the opportunity to travel to a new place with my friends and teammates. As a young Spanish scholar, I looked forward to the opportunity to practice my language skills with native speakers. CREAR set us up with community service projects and field day activities where my team was able to play and interact with local students. I remember having such a blast playing alongside the children in El Torito and seeing how, despite the existing language barrier, my teammates were able to connect with the Toritian students through the language of play.

I was so inspired by that experience that I decided to come back to CREAR and work as an intern during my gap year in 2016. I stayed with a Costa Rican host mother who helped me with my Spanish and introduced me to parts of Costa Rican culture that were previously unknown to me. In my work with CREAR I helped give Art and English classes each day and organized field days for other volunteer groups when they arrived to work with us. My internship was full of magical experiences and throughout the four months I worked with CREAR I loved establishing connections with our students and the people of Playa Sámara.

Following my internship, I returned home to the US and attended Centre College in Danville, KY. I chose Centre because of its incredible study abroad offerings and also because I would be able to continue playing lacrosse in college. I chose to study Spanish and created meaningful connections with my professors both in the classroom as well as on study abroad trips to Brazil, México, and Colombia. On the lacrosse field I deepened my appreciation for teamwork and discipline as my teammates, coaches, and I worked together towards a common goal.

My 4 years at Centre came and went and I graduated into a pandemic stricken world in May 2020. I worked whatever job I could find back home in Chattanooga until February 2021 when I received an email from an old friend, Asociación CREAR! They were looking to hire a volunteer coordinator and English teacher. I wasted no time in applying for the position and within a week I received a job offer.

What started as a one week volunteer trip with a group of high school students had turned into my first “big kid” job! I started working with CREAR in 2021 and I couldn’t be any happier with the work and my position in this organization! In my two years with CREAR I have grown so much as a professional and as a person. Initially, I served as the volunteer coordinator and English teacher. After my first year the position of programs manager was vacated and I took on that role as well, leaving my post in the classroom but still staying heavily involved with CREAR’s day-to-day programming. At the end of my second year with CREAR I received another promotion to the position I currently serve in, Assistant director. As the AD I am responsible for the volunteer program at large as well as supervising and supporting the programs manager, Beatriz, our art teacher, Rekha, and our English teacher, Andrea Ellis. I’m deeply appreciative of the experiences and the opportunities this job has afforded me.

CREAR’s volunteer program is robust and we are able to accommodate the needs and wants of all different kinds of volunteers. Anyone from individual interns looking to practice their Spanish while working with kids, to 50+ person tour groups looking to explore Costa Rica while also giving back. In my two years working with CREAR, one of my favorite parts of the job has been collaborating with my professors and coaches from Centre college to help them bring volunteer groups to Sámara. After planning for over one year, we were finally able to welcome my Spanish professor, Dra. Satty Flaherty-Echeverria, and my lacrosse coach, Grant Zimmerman, to Sámara along with their respective student-volunteer groups.

CREAR worked with Profe Satty to bring a group of students from Kentucky on a summer study abroad program to Playa Sámara. Dra. Flaherty-Echeverria was serving as the trip director for KIIS (Kentucky Institute for International Studies) Costa Rica. KIIS students came to Costa Rica to study Spanish and take a course on Education, Children & Family Studies. As CREAR’s assistant director, I worked closely with Dra. Flaherty-Echeverria to create an itinerary for them while they were in Sámara. The group’s 28 members wanted to stay with host families so I connected them with our contacts locally so everyone could have the “familia Tica” experience. CREAR also collaborated with Directora Mónica from the El Torito Elementary school on a community service project that saw the KIIS students creating a garden for the school and then talking with the directora about the school and education in Guanacaste. The project went off without a hitch and we ended up bringing beautiful plant life to the common area of the school.

The following week the Centre College Men’s Lacrosse team arrived in Sámara for some rest and relaxation after a long and arduous campaign on the lacrosse field. However, the 2023 SAA champions weren’t just going to kick their feet up while they were here, we put them to work and showed them what CREAR was all about. The group had just come from San Jose where they played a friendly game against the Costa Rican National Lacrosse team. Upon their arrival to Sámara, the lacrosse team helped us to run a field day for the students of El Torito, just like we did on my first trip to Costa Rica! As we were getting ready and waiting for the kids to show up, Coach Zimmerman looked at me and asked, “What should I have the team do?” and I responded, “Go out there and have a good time. If the kids see you all having fun they will want to join in.” From there 50+ lacrosse players and the same number of CREAR kids showed up to laugh and play together.

Following an exciting field day full of play and laughter, we split the team into two groups and had them working two community service projects. Directora Luisa from the Sámara Elementary school asked for our help repainting their classrooms and the neighbors from Cantarana asked for our help cleaning up their community park. The lacrosse players put their full effort and focus into their work and with the leadership from Coach Zimmerman and Coach Havira they were able to finish both projects ahead of schedule!

I need to take this opportunity to extend a massive thank you to everyone who participated in these collaborations. Profe Satty, Coach Z, KIIS Costa Rica and Centre Men’s lacrosse certainly left their mark on Sámara. It was such a pleasure to host you all and show you everything that Sámara has to offer. Hola a todos, mi nombre es Lucas Mozingo y soy el Subdirector de la Asociación CREAR. El mundo funciona de manera curiosa y, a menudo, parece que el tiempo corre en círculos. Recientemente comenzamos nuestra temporada de voluntariado 2023 con dos grupos que están muy cerca de mi corazón. ¡Quería contarles toda mi historia y cómo las cosas han cerrado el círculo para mí con CREAR!

Conocí CREAR por primera vez en el verano de 2014; Tenía solo 17 años, estaba en el último año de la escuela secundaria y mi equipo de lacrosse vino en un viaje de "lacrosse y servicio" a Costa Rica. Nunca antes había salido de América del Norte y recuerdo sentir una emoción ansiosa ante la oportunidad de viajar a un nuevo lugar con mis amigos y compañeros de equipo. Como joven estudiante de español, esperaba con ansias la oportunidad de practicar mis habilidades lingüísticas con hablantes nativos. CREAR nos preparó con proyectos de servicio comunitario y actividades de campo donde mi equipo pudo jugar e interactuar con estudiantes locales. Recuerdo haberlo pasado genial jugando junto a los niños en El Torito y ver cómo, a pesar de la barrera del idioma existente, mis compañeros de equipo pudieron conectarse con los estudiantes del Torito a través del lenguaje del juego.

Esa experiencia me inspiró tanto que decidí volver a CREAR y trabajar como pasante durante mi año sabático en 2016. Me quedé con una madre anfitriona costarricense que me ayudó con mi español y me presentó partes de la cultura costarricense. que antes me eran desconocidos. En mi trabajo con CREAR ayudé a dar clases de Arte e Inglés todos los días y organicé días de campo para otros grupos de voluntarios cuando llegaban a trabajar con nosotros. Mi pasantía estuvo llena de experiencias mágicas y durante los cuatro meses que trabajé con CREAR me encantó establecer conexiones con nuestros estudiantes y la gente de Playa Sámara.

Después de mi pasantía, regresé a mi hogar en los EE. UU. y asistí a Center College en Danville, KY. Elegí Center por sus increíbles ofertas de estudios en el extranjero y también porque podría seguir jugando lacrosse en la universidad. Elegí estudiar español y creé conexiones significativas con mis profesores tanto en el salón de clases como en viajes de estudios en el extranjero a Brasil, México y Colombia. En el campo de lacrosse profundicé mi aprecio por el trabajo en equipo y la disciplina mientras mis compañeros de equipo, entrenadores y yo trabajábamos juntos hacia una meta común.

Mis 4 años en el Centro llegaron y se fueron y me gradué en un mundo azotado por una pandemia en mayo de 2020. Trabajé en cualquier trabajo que pude encontrar en mi casa en Chattanooga hasta febrero de 2021 cuando recibí un correo electrónico de un viejo amigo, ¡Asociación CREAR! Estaban buscando contratar un coordinador de voluntarios y un profesor de inglés. No perdí tiempo en solicitar el puesto y en una semana recibí una oferta de trabajo.

¡Lo que comenzó como un viaje voluntario de una semana con un grupo de estudiantes de secundaria se convirtió en mi primer trabajo de "niño grande"! ¡Comencé a trabajar con CREAR en 2021 y no podría estar más feliz con el trabajo y mi posición en esta organización! En mis dos años con CREAR he crecido mucho como profesional y como persona. Inicialmente me desempeñé como coordinadora de voluntarios y maestra de inglés. Después de mi primer año, el puesto de gerente de programas quedó vacante y asumí ese rol también, dejando mi puesto en el salón de clases pero aún estando muy involucrado con la programación del día a día de CREAR. Al finalizar mi segundo año en CREAR recibí otro ascenso al puesto que actualmente desempeño, Asistente de dirección. Como AD, soy responsable del programa de voluntariado en general, además de supervisar y apoyar a la directora de programas, Beatriz, nuestra maestra de arte, Rekha, y nuestra maestra de inglés, Andrea Ellis. Estoy profundamente agradecido por las experiencias y las oportunidades que este trabajo me ha brindado.

El programa de voluntariado de CREAR es sólido y podemos satisfacer las necesidades y los deseos de todos los diferentes tipos de voluntarios. Cualquiera, desde pasantes individuales que buscan practicar su español mientras trabajan con niños, hasta grupos turísticos de más de 50 personas que buscan explorar Costa Rica y al mismo tiempo retribuir. En mis dos años trabajando con CREAR, una de mis partes favoritas del trabajo ha sido colaborar con mis profesores y entrenadores de Center College para ayudarlos a traer grupos de voluntarios a Sámara. Después de planificar durante más de un año, finalmente pudimos darle la bienvenida a mi profesora de español, la Dra. Satty Flaherty-Echeverria y mi entrenador de lacrosse, Grant Zimmerman, a Sámara junto con sus respectivos grupos de estudiantes y voluntarios.

CREAR trabajó con Profe Satty para traer un grupo de estudiantes de Kentucky en un programa de estudios de verano en el extranjero a Playa Sámara. Dra. Flaherty-Echeverria se desempeñaba como directora de viaje de KIIS (Instituto de Kentucky para Estudios Internacionales) Costa Rica. Los estudiantes de KIIS vinieron a Costa Rica para estudiar español y tomar un curso de Educación, Niños y Estudios de la Familia. Como subdirectora de CREAR trabajé muy de cerca con la Dra. Flaherty-Echeverria para crear un itinerario para ellos mientras estaban en Sámara. Los 28 miembros del grupo querían quedarse con familias anfitrionas, así que los conecté con nuestros contactos locales para que todos pudieran tener la experiencia de "familia Tica". CREAR también colaboró ​​con la directora Mónica de la escuela primaria El Torito en un proyecto de servicio comunitario en el que los estudiantes de KIIS crearon un jardín para la escuela y luego hablaron con la directora sobre la escuela y la educación en Guanacaste. El proyecto salió a la perfección y terminamos trayendo una hermosa vida vegetal al área común de la escuela.

A la semana siguiente, el equipo de Lacrosse masculino de Center College llegó a Sámara para descansar y relajarse después de una larga y ardua campaña en la cancha de lacrosse. Sin embargo, los campeones de SAA 2023 no solo se iban a poner los pies en alto mientras estaban aquí, los pusimos a trabajar y les mostramos de qué se trataba CREAR. El grupo acababa de llegar de San José donde jugaron un partido amistoso contra la Selección Nacional de Lacrosse de Costa Rica. A su llegada a Sámara, el equipo de lacrosse nos ayudó a realizar un día de campo para los estudiantes de El Torito, ¡tal como lo hicimos en mi primer viaje a Costa Rica! Mientras nos preparábamos y esperábamos a que aparecieran los niños, el entrenador Zimmerman me miró y preguntó: "¿Qué debo hacer que haga el equipo?" y yo respondí: “Sal y pásala bien. Si los niños ven que todos se divierten, querrán unirse”. A partir de ahí, más de 50 jugadores de lacrosse y la misma cantidad de niños CREAR se presentaron para reír y jugar juntos.

Después de un emocionante día de campo lleno de juegos y risas, dividimos al equipo en dos grupos y los pusimos a trabajar en dos proyectos de servicio comunitario. La directora Luisa de la escuela primaria Sámara solicitó nuestra ayuda para pintar sus aulas y los vecinos de Cantarana solicitaron nuestra ayuda para limpiar el parque de su comunidad. ¡Los jugadores de lacrosse pusieron todo su esfuerzo y concentración en su trabajo y con el liderazgo del entrenador Zimmerman y el entrenador Havira pudieron terminar ambos proyectos antes de lo previsto!

Necesito aprovechar esta oportunidad para extender un enorme agradecimiento a todos los que participaron en estas colaboraciones. Profe Satty, Coach Z, KIIS Costa Rica y Center Men's lacrosse sin duda dejaron su huella en Sámara. Fue un placer recibirlos a todos y mostrarles todo lo que Sámara tiene para ofrecer. ¡Les deseamos a todos un buen viaje y esperamos que regresen pronto!
