Creating a New Home with CREAR

Last January, I arrived in Costa Rica past dark at Liberia International Airport in search of a new place to be at home. After three hours seated and watching shadowed details of Guanacaste life rush past the tourist van window and into the night, I found myself standing in an empty house with my mother, my older brother, his girlfriend, and our two cats—my family. This house was meant to be my new home, and though I’d never seen it before, its promise twinkled under the dim kitchen lights. The next morning, all potentials ran loose in the surrounding bright, green yard: nature, community, rest, adventure, creativity! This is where my journey with CREAR sparked its beginning.

I have found immense joy and community in teaching and engaging with children ever since I myself was a child among peers, helping out in the elementary classroom wherever and whenever I could. My passion has only grown since, and now at 18-years-old I look back on full-scheduled high school days of joy-filled afternoons spent helping my peers with schoolwork after class before hurrying off to volunteer tutoring kids in elementary English in Math in an entirely different part of my city. When I graduated high school and later moved to Costa Rica, I left these opportunities behind, so when I heard about CREAR, I knew instantly that it was exactly the purpose I needed in my new life.

I met with Andrea Keith, CREAR’s Executive Director, and Lucia Mahlich Barreto, the Programs Manager, in February to talk about what sort of role I could play this year within CREAR’s programs. Their two lovely spirits greeted me with openness and love, and after discussing CREAR’s return to in-person classes, we agreed I could volunteer as a classroom aid each week. At that point, my knowledge of the Spanish language was limited to “Hola! Me llamo Lu”—much less than is expected in a classroom!—but Andrea and Lucia were completely unfazed and encouraged me to learn along the way as I helped teach English and Art and guided CREAR’s students through dynamic educational activities.

Starting in-person classes in early April after many lessons and activities were done at home was turbulent. At the time, CREAR was still coordinating consistent teachers for English and Art classes, so classes in El Torito and Samara were taught differently each day. I even got to create a lesson and lead an English class with my mom, Gail, who also volunteers at CREAR! Despite the bumpy path to finding our English teacher Lucas Mozingo and Art teacher Rekha Chandrasekharan, working with CREAR was fun and bright the whole way. Now, our lessons are wonderfully successful, and as I learn more Spanish, I can communicate and connect in a real way with each student.

Even when I struggle to recall the words I need or simply haven’t learned them yet, verbal communication is never the end of the “conversation” at CREAR. There is a quiet magic in teaching, listening, and playing that makes every day beautiful. Despite not always having the words to say what I want to each student, I can still communicate to them my appreciation, excitement, and ideas through smiles, dances, and pseudo-sign language! And, on the other hand, volunteering with CREAR has helped me learn about how Spanish is spoken in Costa Rica in a way that reading a textbook cannot; almost every day, I learn about a new colloquial word from the students, and I’ve definitely learned how to listen for “little” words with “-ito” at the end!

After volunteering with CREAR and working closely with the entire team for only four full months, I already feel such a strong sense of community. As I invest more and more in lessons and activities, team projects, and the lives of our students over time, I receive again and again twice as much love and enthusiasm as I put into it all. For me, CREAR is a place where I know I will always have a purpose, and I know that what I do matters. As I continue moving around in my life—the first move being to attend my first year at the University of Oregon in the United States—I will be sure to return to CREAR to find some much-needed, whole-hearted connection and growth. I have truly built a new home here in Costa Rica with CREAR!

Creando un nuevo hogar con CREAR

El pasado enero, llegué a Costa Rica al anochecer, pasando por el aeropuerto internacional de Liberia, en busca de un nuevo lugar para estar en casa. Luego de pasar tres horas sentada, mirando por la ventana del bus turístico los detalles de las sombras de la vida en Guanacaste; me encontré de pie en una casa vacía con mi madre, mi hermano mayor, su novia, nuestros dos gatos, o sea mi familia. Esta casa, destinada a ser mi nuevo hogar, y aunque nunca la había visto antes, su promesa brillaba bajo las tenues luces de la cocina. A la mañana siguiente, todos los potenciales se desataron en el brillante y verde jardín circundante: ¡naturaleza, comunidad, descanso, aventura, creatividad! Aquí es donde mi viaje con CREAR provocó su comienzo.

Me encontré con una inmensa alegría y me sentía en comunidad, al enseñar y relacionarme con niños y niñas, recordando como fue, cuando yo estaba pequeña entre compañeras y compañeros, ayudando en el aula de primaria, en los momentos que podía hacerlo. Mi pasión sólo ha crecido desde entonces, ahora a mis dieciocho años, recuerdo los días de la secundaria, programados en su totalidad y las tardes llenas de alegría, cuando pasaba ayudando a mis compañeros con los trabajos escolares, para después apresuradamente ser voluntaria en tutorías de estudiantes de inglés, de primaria en matemáticas, en una zona completamente diferente de mi ciudad. Cuando me gradué de la secundaria, posteriormente la mudanza a Costa Rica, dejé esas oportunidades atrás, una vez que escuché sobre CREAR, supe instantáneamente que eso era exactamente el propósito que necesitaba en mi nueva vida.

En el mes de Febrero, conocí a Andrea Keith, la Directora Ejecutiva de CREAR y a Lucía Mahlich Barreto, la Gestora de Programas, quise hablar sobre el tipo de rol que podría jugar este año en los programas de CREAR. Sus espíritus amorosos, me saludaron con apertura y amor, luego de dialogar sobre las clases presenciales, acordamos que iba a ser voluntariado apoyando en las clases cada semana. En ese momento, ¡mi conocimiento del idioma español era limitado a ¨Hola!, Me llamo Lu¨ - ¡mucho menos de lo que se esperaba en un salón de clases! – sin embargo Andrea y Lucía no se inmutaron y me animaron a comprender en el camino mientras yo ayudaba a enseñar inglés y arte, guiando a las y los estudiantes de CREAR a través de actividades educativas dinámicas.

Iniciar clases presenciales en CREAR al inicio de Abril, fue turbulento, lleno de planeamiento de lecciones y actividades divertidas y educativas para las y los estudiantes. En ese momento, CREAR todavía estaba coordinando maestros consistentes para las clases de inglés y arte, por lo que las clases en El Torito y Sámara se impartían de manera diferente cada día. Incluso tuve que planear y liderar una lección de inglés con mi madre, Gail, ¡quien también es voluntaria en CREAR! Luego de pasar por el camino lleno de baches, encontrando a nuestro maestro de Inglés Lucas Mozingo y la maestra de arte Rekha Chandrasekharan, trabajar con CREAR fue divertido y brillante, durante todo el camino. Ahora, nuestras lecciones son maravillosamente exitosas, y a medida que aprendo más español, puedo comunicarme y conectar en una forma real con cada estudiante.

Incluso cuando me cuesta recordar las palabras que necesito o simplemente no las he aprendido todavía, la comunicación verbal nunca es el final de la ¨conversación¨ en CREAR. Existe una silenciosa magia en la enseñanza, en la escucha y en el juego, que hace que cada día sea hermoso. A pesar de no siempre tener las palabras para decir lo que quiero a cada estudiante, igualmente puedo comunicarme con ellas y ellos, para expresar mi apreciación, mis emociones e ideas a través de sonrisas, bailes, y pseudo-señales como lenguaje. Por otro lado, el voluntariado con CREAR me ha ayudado a aprender la forma en que el español es hablado en Costa Rica, una manera en que no se puede aprender leyendo un libro; casi que cada día, aprendí sobre nuevas palabras coloquiales desde los estudiantes, ¡definitivamente aprendí a escuchar esas pequeñas palabras con el - “ito” al final!

Luego de ser voluntaria con CREAR y trabajando de manera cercana con todo el equipo durante cuatro meses, he sentido una fuerte sensación de comunidad. Entre más y más dedico tiempo en planear las lecciones y proyectos que se plantean en el equipo, recibo una y otra vez el doble de amor y entusiasmo que le proyecto a todo. Para mí, CREAR es un lugar donde sé que siempre tendré un propósito y sé que lo que hago importa. A medida que continúe en mi vida, el siguiente paso que sigue es asistir a mi primer año en la Universidad de Oregon en los Estados Unidos, tengo la seguridad de que al regresar a CREAR encontraré una conexión y un crecimiento muy sincero y necesario. ¡Realmente he construido una nueva casa aquí en Costa Rica con CREAR!.
